N ewton Allen performs with his trio "Doc Allen and the Heart Strings". His trio includes the esteemed Sam Levine on woodwinds including sax, clarinet, flute, and whistle; the extraordinary Gary Tussing on cello; and Doc Allen on piano. Newton's "trio" sometimes expands to include violin and percussion depending on the occasion.

They perform classical, light jazz, pop, and movie themes as background music at private functions including weddings, receptions, cocktail parties, and fund raisers.

Doc Allen and the Heartstrings have performed locally at many fine Nashville restaurants including Merchants, F. Scott's, Belle Meade Brasserie, Arthur's, Ruth's Chris Steak House, Lowe's Vanderbilt Plaza, Atlantis, and Casablanca. (An acoustic piano at the venue is nice but not required, as Doc Allen has a portable keyboard with remarkable sound.)
